Domain Transfer

Every domain name (example.com) is registered with a domain registrar - a company that maintains a database of domains and the IP addresses they map to.

There are many different domain registrars. They vary in price, reliability, features, and technical support. If you decide to transfer your domain from one domain registrar to another, keep in mind these important points:
  1. The email address on file for the domain's Administrative Contact must be a functioning email address that you have access to.
  2. WHOIS privacy protection does not transfer but it can usually be ordered from your new domain registrar.
  3. The domain must be more than 60 days old and must be unlocked at the current registrar before a transfer can be initiated.
  4. You must obtain the EPP authorization key for the domain from the current registrar in order to initiate the transfer. Contact your current registrar to obtain the EPP key.
  5. Any registrar transfer made during the first 45 days of the domain registration period will not have an additional year added to the expiration date for the domain. We recommend transferring before renewal or waiting 45 days after renewal to make a transfer.
  6. If it's more convenient, you can always keep your current domain registrar and just update your nameservers to point to your new web host. Then you can request a domain transfer at a later date.
